Develop design for custom made footwear

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to develop a design for custom made footwear

Application

This unit applies to interpreting design requirements in consultation with client, determining specifications and developing the design for custom made footwear.

Work may involve individual and team activities.

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment

standard operating procedures

work instructions

oral, written and visual communication

quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output

housekeeping

tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with communication to establish design requirements with the client, including taking accurate measurements, and document specifications to guide production. Ongoing learning is required to maintain currency of design options and teamwork is applied to ensure client requirements are identified and achieved in the design. Planning and organising skills are required to determine production requirements in relation to the design. Initiative and enterprise and problem solving will be used to create design concepts and match them with production processes. Self management will be applied to ensure design meets design requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1 Research footwear designs

1.1 Information sources on footwear design and construction techniques are identified and accessed to maintain currency of knowledge

1.2 Current and historical trends in footwear design and construction techniques are analysed

1.3 Impact of footwear componentry designs on footwear are analysed

1.4 Footwear designs for various purposes are analysed

1.5 Design tools are used to develop design concepts

1.6 Current industry practices are analysed for application in own work

2 Determine design requirements

2.1 Purpose of footwear is confirmed with client

2.2 Client requirements for footwear design are confirmed with client

2.3 Communication skills are used to identify key priorities of client

2.4 Preliminary design concepts are explored with the client using sketches, pictures, software tools or sample shoes

3 Undertake footwear measurements

3.1 Measurements of foot are taken to determine footwear size requirements and in accordance with OHS practices

3.2 Gait analysis is performed to obtain baseline data of clients walk pattern

3.3 Trial fit is conducted using commercial footwear or client's own footwear

3.4 Measurements are reviewed to confirm that all required information has been collected

4 Confirm footwear design

4.1 Cost estimates are calculated and provided to client

4.2 Design to be used for footwear production is finalised and order confirmed

4.3 Design and requirements are documented
