Application
This unit specifies the competency required to identify materials suitable for the construction of kitchens or bathrooms.
It is designed for use in a pre-employment skills introduction program and is suitable for use in institutional-based vocational programs. Skills development will take place under direct supervision.
This unit is not to be used in a traineeship or apprenticeship training program or associated qualifications. It is only to be used in pre-employment programs and carries no credit towards apprenticeship/trade and other qualification types in manufacturing and furnishings.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

5 | Identify materials used in splashbacks | 5.1 | Identify types of materials used to create splashbacks |
5.2 | Determine handling and care requirements
5.3 | Determine the benefits and constraints, including range and cost |
6 | Identify bases/feet for base cabinets | 6.1 | Identify types of bases/feet for base cabinets |
6.2 | Determine the benefits and constraints, including range and cost |
7 | Develop proposals for materials for use in kitchen/bathroom construction | 7.1 | Identify requirements from client brief, project sheets or work instructions |
7.2 | Select the most appropriate materials to suit the client needs according to the information provided
7.3 | Record the selection of all materials giving reasons for selection
7.4 | Determine the work, health and safety (WHS) and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and considerations for the materials selected
7.5 | Develop a proposal for materials for use in an inexpensive bathroom cabinet fitout and a ‘high end’ kitchen, in accordance with common industry procedures |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:
following work instructions, procedures and safe work practices
identifying and interpreting client brief, project sheets, specifications, drawings and other relevant information in identifying materials suitable for kitchen or bathroom construction
using manufacturer catalogues and computer operations for internet access and searches
identifying and reporting on a range of materials used in kitchen or bathroom construction, including:
a range of materials used in cabinet construction
a minimum of at least four (4) types of materials used in kitchen construction or a minimum of at least two (2) types of materials used in bathroom construction
a minimum of at least four (4) types of material used in benchtop construction
a minimum of at least four (4) types of material used in door production - (one (1) door material and three (3) finishes)
a minimum of at least four (4) types of material used to create splashbacks
a minimum of two (2) bases/feet for base cabinets
benefits and constraints of each selection, including cost
handling and care requirements of materials selected
developing a proposal to put forward a range of materials to construct an inexpensive bathroom cabinet fit-out or a ‘high end’ kitchen
explaining the reasons for selection of material put forward to client based on appropriateness, range and cost
communicating and working effectively and safely with others
maintaining accurate records.
Evidence of Knowledge
Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:
safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE
information resources
research techniques
features of a range of kitchen and bathroom materials
precautions to be observed when handling materials
types of finishes available for cabinet doors
types of bases/feet for base cabinets and their appropriateness
benefits and constraints to be considered when selecting materials and bases/feet, including the following:
benefits:
aesthetic qualities
longevity
durability
restorability
constraints:
cost
suitability
reasons for selection and what constitutes a ‘high end’ kitchen
client brief proposals
recording and reporting procedures.
Assessment Conditions
Assessors must:
satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator
have vocational competency in identifying materials suitable for kitchen and bathroom construction, at least to the level being assessed, with relevant industry knowledge and experience
Assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic workplace situations.
Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant procedures, product and manufacturing specifications associated with this unit.
Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
