Prepare for vessel maintenance


Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare the resources and work area prior to maintenance of marine mechanical plant and systems, including auxiliary machinery, propulsion plant and service systems, such as liquefied petroleum gas, fire hoses and associated pipework and fittings.

This unit applies to individuals who maintain marine mechanical plant and systems on small vessels used for aquaculture and fishing operations.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Select and prepare resources

1.1 Check required materials correspond to the quantity and type against work instructions

1.2 Ensure selected equipment is serviceable and of the type and quantity required to carry out the specific task

1.3 Report any restrictions and variances to resources that may impede maintenance progress or require contingency or emergency response to supervisor

1.4 Handle, store and secure material and equipment according to workplace procedures and health and safety requirements

2. Identify and prepare the work area

2.1 Prepare work area against the operational requirements of the work instruction

2.2 Confirm work area, machinery and equipment as being safe for work to proceed according to regulatory, health and safety and workplace requirements

2.3 Ensure work area is accessible and free from obstruction for receiving and storing materials and resources needed for the work to proceed

2.4 Confirm specifications, containment strategies, plans, materials and equipment are available at the workplace according to schedule and workplace procedures
