Application
This unit applies to recreational fishers who are responsible for constructing artificial lures for freshwater and saltwater environments.
This unit may also apply to outdoor recreation leaders working for outdoor education or adventure providers; volunteer groups; not-for-profit organisations or government agencies.
Prerequisites
SISOFSH201A Catch and handle fish
SISOFSH204A Select, use and maintain fishing tackle outfits
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes of a unit of competency. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the required skills and knowledge section and the range statement. Assessment of performance is to be consistent with the Evidence Guide. |
1. Design a fishing lure | 1.1. Identify target species and relevant lure application. 1.2. Identify key design features for the target species and application of the lure. 1.3. Design a lure suitable for the identified species and application. 1.4. Identify appropriate construction methods. |
2. Construct a fishing lure | 2.1. Evaluate, select and source appropriate materials and equipment suitable for lure manufacture according to organisational policies and procedures. 2.2. Construct a proto type lure according to design parameters and selected construction techniques. 2.3. Add special effects, paint and detail to the lure. 2.4. Apply appropriate finishes and sealers to the lure. |
3. Evaluate effectiveness of the fishing lure | 3.1. Apply methods to rig lures and balance lure to outfit. 3.2. Identify methods for working lures in different conditions. 3.3. Trial the lure in specific fishing environments and apply correct action when fish strike according to organisational policies and procedures and relevant legislation. 3.4. Test lure action and evaluate if the desired outcome has been achieved. 3.5. Evaluate the casting action and performance of the lure. 3.6. Identify and implement improvements to the lure as required. 3.7. Apply methods to maintain lures according to organisational policies and procedures. |
Required Skills
Required skills |
problem-solving skills to: respond appropriately to technology advancements determine techniques and equipment to use when constructing fishing lures trial and test lure in specific environments literacy skills to read, interpret and implement lure construction information, instructions and material data sheets planning and organising skills to: source appropriate lure construction equipment and materials ensure all gear and equipment is in good working order select appropriate fishing environment to work lure numeracy skills to calculate and estimate material quantities and weights self management skills to review and reflect on own performance and set goals to improve techniques first aid and emergency response skills appropriate to lure construction. |
Required knowledge |
legislation and organisational policies and procedures to enable safe and legal conduct minimal impact codes to ensure protection of the fishing environment industry terminology related to lure construction to enable effective selection and use of materials and equipment lure construction, design and evaluation techniques to ensure safe and accurate use methods of working and trialling lures in different conditions to test effectiveness range of freshwater and marine fish, habitats and food types maintenance procedures for lures to enhance lifespan equipment used to construct a lure, its characteristics and technology, and advantages and disadvantages of the range of equipment. |
Evidence Required
The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.
Overview of assessment
Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit | Evidence of the following is essential: demonstrates knowledge of the techniques which apply to the design and construction of a lure and selects appropriate equipment and materials uses a range of common designs, construction methods, tools, equipment and materials to construct working lures rigs, works and tests lure in specific fishing environments, and evaluates its effectiveness and identifies potential improvements. |
Context of and specific resources for assessment | Assessment must ensure construction and evaluation of a range of lures suitable to local conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance. Assessment must also ensure access to: an appropriate lure construction area for safe construction, review, testing and evaluation of lures a fishing environment to work and trial lures materials and equipment to construct and rig lures. |
Method of assessment | A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit: observation of safe participation and demonstration of all practical tasks oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of lure construction to suit the targeted fish species observation of working, testing and evaluating lures third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance. Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended, for example: SISOFSH310A Tie simple fishing flies. |
Range Statement
The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance.
