Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Evaluate images for combining
   • Screen rulings are checked according to job specifications and enterprise procedures
   • Dot percentages are checked according to job specifications and enterprise procedure
   • Image orientation is checked according to job specifications
2. Contact film
   • Frame is prepared for contacting according to enterprise procedures
   • Film is contacted using a vacuum frame and using predetermined exposures according to job specifications
3. Combine film manually
   • A range of basic combining techniques is identified to meet diverse client requirements and film substrates
   • Film is combined employing brush skills to achieve opaquing according to job specifications
   • Film is combined adding masks according to design specifications
   • Film is combined adding tints and stipples according to design specifications
4. Combine paste-up elements manually
   • Film is combined adding tints and stipples according to design specifications
   • Screen, line and type images are combined on base sheet according to job specifications
   • Masks are produced and positioned on base sheet to add tints, stipples and colour according to design specifications
   • Rules, keylines and cut marks are drawn according to job specifications
   • Assembled paste-up is checked for squareness, accuracy in positioning of elements and cleanliness of work
5. Maintain register of combined images
   • Punch register systems are applied to combine images
   • Registration of combined images is accurately placed to ensure alignment of film
   • Registration of combined images is accurately secured to ensure alignment of all components
6. Prepare finished film and artwork for next production stage
   • Finished film and artwork are laid-down and spaced according to specified paper size identified in job specifications
   • Pages and film are pasted up to suit given imposition

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare and assemble TWO designated layouts, using a variety of selected image elements, following job brief and according to listed performance criteria (finished film and artwork must be laid-down and spaced according to printer’s imposition identified in job specifications and registration of combined images accurately secured)

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources

demonstrate skill of combining safe light and room light environments using various light sensitive materials, exposure and processing systems.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain how printing processes affect requirements for combining

list appropriate films used for contacting and duplicating

outline procedure for establishing basic exposure data for contact emulsions

describe spreading and choking requirements for preparation of a mask

identify techniques used to control degree of spread and choke

detail requirements of an effective pin registration system

name main types of pin register systems and outline their applications\

list manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task and identify where are they kept and what information is included.
