Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan and undertake the installation of specialist staging equipment for productions in the entertainment and events industries.
Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that specialist staging equipment is installed and tested in line with safety standards, prior to performances or events. They may be responsible for supervising others.
The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:
CPCCLDG3001A Licence to perform dogging
CPCCLRG3001A Licence to perform rigging basic level
CPCCLRG3002A Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
CPCCLRG4001A Licence to perform rigging advanced level.
Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering a construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).
Achievement of the unit ‘CPCCOHS1001A Work safely in the construction industry’ fulfils this requirement.

1. Prepare to install specialist staging equipment | 1.1 Clarify requirements for specialist staging equipment in consultation with relevant personnel and with reference to production documentation 1.2 Inspect fly tower and stage at venues to identify modifications that may need to be made to existing grid or infrastructure 1.3 Organise modifications in line with own level of responsibility and refer matters that need attention to relevant personnel 1.4 Plan installation work, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and licensing requirements 1.5 Anticipate problems that may arise during installation, rehearsal and operational phases and plan accordingly 1.6 Obtain approval for a weight loads plan and safe work methods statement |
2. Complete specialist staging installation | 2.1 Load counter-weight cradles to fly scenery and other items in line with production requirements 2.2 Rig bridles, spreaders or other rigging equipment to create rigging points not covered by existing grids 2.3 Install and synchronise chain motors and winches as required 2.4 Install brailing lines to manage scenery and other items in grids 2.5 Safely install specialist staging elements in a sequence that maximises efficiency of operations and meets production deadlines 2.6 Progressively test equipment installed for functionality and adjust installation as required |
3. Complete post-show operations | 3.1 Uninstall specialist staging equipment safely and in a sequence that maximises efficiency of operations 3.2 Organise maintenance of equipment as required before storing or transporting 3.3 Provide input into post-show debriefing sessions and note aspects of staging operations that could be improved in future productions 3.4 Review own work performance and adjust work practices accordingly |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
prepare a weight loads plan for at least one production
install and uninstall a range of specialist staging equipment for at least two productions
work collaboratively
follow safe work practices.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements the individual must:
describe hazards associated with installing staging equipment and explain how to minimise them
describe methods of lifting, handling and supporting staging equipment during installation
explain what needs to be included in a safe work methods statement
describe issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of installing specialist staging equipment, along with solutions to address them
describe safety issues that impact on flying systems, including regulations about:
tasks that require a licensed rigger
work that can be undertaken by unlicensed personnel.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to venues with a fly tower and productions that require specialist staging equipment.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
