Use beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets to land catch

Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain and prepare beach seining, mesh or gill netting gear ready for deployment, and retrieve the gear. It includes the ability to maintain equipment, connect and configure components, deploy and retrieve seines or nets and undertake initial seafood handling specific to beach seining or gill netting operations.

The unit applies to individuals who undertake routine beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets fishing operations under the direction of a supervisor.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Maintain beach seines, mesh or gill nets ready for deployment

1.1 Check beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets against supervisor instructions

1.2 Identify and report beach seine, mesh net or gill net components that are worn or damaged and lack security or symmetry to supervisor

1.3 Recondition or repair worn or damaged beach seine, mesh net or gill net components according to supervisor instructions

1.4 Dispose of defective beach seine, mesh net or gill net components according to workplace requirements

2. Deploy beach seines, mesh or gill nets

2.1 Connect beach seine, mesh net or gill net components in the configuration according to fishing method and supervisor instructions

2.2 Deploy the beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets according to supervisor instructions and safety procedures

2.3 Deploy beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets ensuring they are not twisted and are in a pattern required by the fishing operation

2.4 Deploy devices and systems to minimise environmental impact and interaction with by-catch

3. Retrieve beach seines, mesh or gill nets

3.1 Attach beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets to winches or haulers and retrieve to maximise catch according to supervisor instructions

3.2 Land and remove catch from beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets to maximise seafood quality

3.3 Disconnect and stow beach seines, mesh nets or gill nets, ensuring ease of deployment and a safe working area

3.4 Clean equipment and storage area according to health and safety and biosecurity requirements

4. Land, contain and sort catch

4.1 Prepare containment devices to receive the catch according to supervisor instructions

4.2 Load catch safety into containment devices

4.3 Handle and sort seafood according to food safety and hygiene requirements

4.4 Sort catch to maximise by-catch survival and seafood quality
